How we draw a door handle.

8 March 2026 · 5 min read

A door handle is one of perhaps fifteen objects a resident touches before breakfast. It carries more brand weight per square centimetre than any other component in a residence. We treat it as such.

The CPH door-handle process began in October 2025 with twelve hand sketches by the design lead. The sketches explored grip geometry, weight, and the question of whether the handle should announce itself or recede. We chose recede.

Three were prototyped in brushed brass by a workshop in Italy that we have used before. We held all three for a month, opened doors with them at every time of day, washed them with kitchen soap and with hand cream, and watched them patina. The middle option developed the most consistent finish across hands. We selected that one.

The handle is now in production at the Italian workshop on a five-year contract. It carries no maker’s mark. It is heavier than it looks. It will outlast the building we are putting it in.
